Simba idolises his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub's arrival. Scar, Mufasa's brother—and former heir to the throne—has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is ravaged with betrayal, tragedy and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba's exile. With help from a curious pair of newfound friends, Simba will have to figure out how to grow up and take back what is rightfully his.
There is a problem when we transpose this story into the animal kingdom. For this is the place of the natural, the unchanging. The cycle of naturalized life sounds backward, as do power relations. It is striking in the movie, for example, the place of submission of females in this universe, their domestic role of caring for and protecting their offspring. Women's place is obviously not the same in the world of nature and culture. This issue was already raised in the 1990s in relation to the first version. There has, however, been no substantial change in this construction for 2019.
