The powerful true story of Harvard-educated lawyer Bryan Stevenson, who goes to Alabama to defend the disenfranchised and wrongly condemned — including Walter McMillian, a man sentenced to death despite evidence proving his innocence. Bryan fights tirelessly for Walter with the system stacked against them.
Based on a true story this legal drama about the wrongful conviction of an innocent black man who's put on death row showcases some powerful performances from its central cast. An idealist young lawyer sets out to prove his innocence and unravels a disturbing plot contrived by the white police department, the prosecutor, witness and even judge to frame an innocent black man as the sacrificial lamb in order to close the case. I found the story oddly fascinating and unsettling. It's one thing if a black man was convicted in a case of mistaken identity but it's racism and corruption of all levels of authority to construct evidence to frame an innocent man for the purpose of closure. Granted Alabama has a history of racial prejudice but this event was not that long ago. The story is very similar to the Hurricane with Denzel Washington. It's a great watch that does drag out the drama in some scenes and I would've liked more emphasis on the legal aspects of the case but overall it was enjoyable.
